9 Steps To More Self Care

These works have emerged from the collaboration between Verena Tscherner and Katja Berger.
Through a collaborative artistic process, the artists created a series of works that explores questions of self-care, identity, and inner attitude.
The series takes as its starting point nine concepts from the speech “When I began to love myself…,” inspired by a text by Kim McMillen:
SELF-AWARENESS, BEING AUTHENTIC, RESPECT, MATURITY, SIMPLICITY, SELF-LOVE, MODESTY, AWARENESS, and WISDOM OF THE HEART.
These terms are not merely named but translated into a form that can be experienced through the senses.
Verena Tscherner speaks each word individually, transforming language into a sound relief that appears as a sculptural element behind the works via 3D printing. Katja Berger develops accompanying graphic motifs that are transferred onto textiles. Voice, image, and material combine to form an artistic expression in which different media intertwine.
The folded sweaters are enclosed in transparent vacuum-formed shells. What promises protection and warmth appears at the same time fixed and confined. Between care and restriction, closeness and stagnation, a field of tension emerges that gives the works their distinctive presence.
